Choosing the right airport
Flying into a major hub is not always the cheapest or fastest option. Secondary airports near your destination can save money and time, especially when they are closer to where you are staying. Before booking, compare two or three nearby airports and include ground transportation costs, not only the ticket price.
Understanding baggage rules
Baggage fees vary between airlines and fare classes. Basic economy tickets may not include a carry-on beyond a personal item. Before you fly:
- Check the airline's carry-on and checked-bag size and weight limits.
- Confirm whether your fare includes a checked bag.
- Weigh luggage at home to avoid surprise fees.
- Check whether international and domestic legs have different allowances.
Managing connection time
Connection needs vary by airport and itinerary. A practical starting point is 45–60 minutes for domestic connections, about 90 minutes when connecting from a domestic to an international flight, and two hours or more for international connections or terminal changes. Add more time when changing airlines or collecting and rechecking bags. Always verify whether the airport requires you to clear security or immigration again.

Location before amenities
A hotel with impressive amenities but a long commute can cost more in time and transportation than a simpler hotel in a central location. Map the places you expect to visit before booking.
Reading reviews the right way
- Sort by most recent to understand current conditions.
- Look for repeated concerns about noise, cleanliness or service.
- Compare guest photos with the property's official images.
What to confirm before booking
- Cancellation policy: Know the exact deadline and refund conditions.
- Resort or destination fees: Check the total price, not only the headline rate.
- Check-in and check-out: Pay attention when arriving early or departing late.
- What is included: Confirm what breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi and other benefits actually cover.
Room type matters
Confirm the bed configuration, view, accessibility features and floor preference when those details matter. “Standard room” can mean different things at different properties.

Choose connectivity before you land
Planning ahead can prevent the hassle of searching for a SIM card or dependable Wi-Fi after a long flight.
- Travel eSIM: Install it before departure and activate it when needed without changing a physical SIM.
- Local physical SIM: It may cost less, but can require a store visit, identification or local paperwork.
- International roaming: It is convenient, but may be more expensive per gigabyte.
Before you leave
- Confirm that your phone is unlocked.
- Confirm that your specific device supports eSIM.
- Estimate your data needs; maps and messaging generally use less than streaming and video calls.
Backup connectivity
Download offline maps and save your hotel address, confirmation numbers and emergency contacts on the device in case you lose service.

Choosing a cabin
- Interior: No window and usually the most affordable.
- Ocean view: A window or porthole without private outdoor access.
- Balcony: Private outdoor space.
- Suite: More space and sometimes additional benefits.
Consider how much time you will spend in the cabin before paying more for a view or additional space.
Port days and sea days
Port days let passengers go ashore, sometimes with extra excursion costs. Sea days provide more time for onboard activities. Review the itinerary carefully so its pace matches the trip you want.
Travel documents
Requirements depend on the cruise line, itinerary and nationality. Check the rules for every port with the cruise line and official government sources. A passport with sufficient validity is generally the safest document to carry. Keep separate physical and digital copies of important documents.
What may cost extra
Cruise fares commonly include the cabin, meals in main dining areas and basic entertainment. Alcohol, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities and excursions may cost extra. Include them when estimating the real trip budget.
